　 Scientists are finding ways to stop air pollution especially in bigindustrial areas and densely-populated cities. They are studying new ways ofgenerating electricity that may be less damaging to the environment. In themeantime, many power plants are being modernized to give off less pollutedmaterial. Also, engineers try to design and locate new power plants to dominimum damage to the environment.

　 However, it may be that we still have a long way to go before we have aclean world. Nearly all of the countries are trying hard to prevent and controlair pollution. There indeed seems to be no end to tasks that environmentalistswill be required to do. People will continually find new ways to controlpollution.

　 Environmental problems are becoming more and more serious all over theworld. For example, cars have made the air unhealthy for people to breathe andpoisonous gas is given off by factories. Trees on the hills have been cut downand waste water is being poured continuously into rivers.Furthermore, whereverwe go today, we can find rubbish carelessly disposed. Pollution is, in fact,threatening our existence.The earth is our home and we have the duty to takecare of it for ourselves and for our later generations. Fortunately, more andmore people have realized these problems. Measures have been taken to cope withthese problems by the government. Laws have been passed to stop pollution. Ihope the problem will be solved in the near future and our home will becomebetter and better.

　 There are still many problems of environmental protection in recent years.One of the most serious problems is the serious pollution of air, water andsoil. the polluted air does great harm to people s health. The polluted watercauses diseases and death. What is more, vegetation had been greatly reducedwith the rapid growth of modern cities.

　 To protect the environment, governments of many countries have done a lot.Legislative steps have been introduced to control air pollution, to protect theforest and sea resources and to stop any environmental pollution. Therefore,governments are playing the most important role in the environmental protectiontoday.

　 In my opinion, to protect environment, the government must take even moreconcrete measures. First, it should let people fully realize the importance ofenvironmental protection through education. Second, much more efforts should bemade to put the population

　 4 planning policy into practice, because more peoplemeans more people means more pollution. Finally, those who destroy theenvironment intentionally should be severely punished. We should let them knowthat destroying environment means destroying mankind themselves.

　 Once man did not have to think about the protection of his environment.There were few people on the earth, and natural resources seemed to beunlimited.

　 Today things are different. The world has become too crowded. We are usingup our natural resources,and polluting our environment with dangerous chemicals.If we continue to do this, human life on earth will not survive.

　 We realize that if too many fish are taken from the sea, there will soon benone left. Yet,with modern fishing methods, more and more fish are caught.Weknow that if too many trees are cut down, forests will disappear. Yet, wecontinue to use powerful machines to cut down more and more trees. We see thatif rivers are polluted with waste products, we will die. Yet, waste

　 We know that if the population continues to rise at the present rate, in afew years, there won’t be enough food.What can we do to solve theseproblems?

　 If we eat more vegetables and less meat, there will be more food available.Land for crops feeds five times more people than land where animals arekept.

　 Our natural resources will last longer if we learn to recycie them.

　 The world population will not rise so quickly if people use modern methodsof birth control.

　 Finally, if we educate people to think about the problems we shall have abetter and cleaner planet in the future.

　 The world we live in is becoming more and more intolerable because ofenvironmental destruction. Bird flu and Sars are two typical examples thatenvironmental destruction may threaten our life. Besides, forest destruction ,water and air pollution result in decrease of planting land and unpleasantweather.

　 Serious as the problem seems, we can come up with

　 6 some measures to dealwith it. First of all, the authorities should adopt the policy of “sustainabledevelopment”, and laws concerning environmental protection should be put intoeffect and enforced strictly just as our government has been doing.
